Beer log

No sooner do I start the beer log then I decide to cut my beer consumption down to 1 beer per week. Seriously. It’s cyclo-cross season, I’ve trained really hard, I have some big goals, and it’s just dumb to weigh 5 more pounds than I need to because I’m drinking a beer every night. So now, it’ll be special. I mean, I even have a Westvleteren just sitting in my fridge in Boston waiting for me to drink. It’s going to have to wait.

Last night we walked over to Novare Res in Portland. Definitely one of the best Belgian beer bars I’ve been to. I had a Bush Scaldis.

Sometimes you see it listed as Belgian Strong Ale, sometimes as a quad, sometimes even as a barley wine, which is definitely a miscategorization. It’s a smooth, caramel color, 12% so you really taste the alcohol, like a whisky or cognac, nutty, with a little dark fruit aroma. Heaven in your mouth. I only had one 233 ml pour and I was chatty.

I’m reading this right now:

Michael Jackson has a wonderful way of writing about beer that combines history of the land, it’s people, and their beer. His love for all three things comes through clearly, but it’s balanced with technical information and history that makes the book readable.

nice, dude! and a Westvleteren in your fridge? nuts. I treated myself to a Dogfish Head Punkin Ale last night. it wasn’t half bad.

also, I’m off coffee except for Friday’s and espresso on the weekends, though those are a maybe depending on how I’m feeling.
