On Tucson

I went to Tucson to train for the first time in 1994. That hit me a few weeks into my trip this year; it had been 20 years since my first winter there. Since then I've been a snowbird in a lot of other places: Gainesville, Tallahassee, Orlando, Tampa, Austin, Athens, San Diego, Winston-Salem. But eventually, once I was a full-time rider again (and single), I started going back to Tucson every year. Of all the factors (weather, terrain, riding safety/accommodations, community), Tucson may not be perfect in any one area, but it has the highest overall score.

October 'Cross Season Update

Sponsors and friends,

Welcome to a long overdue update on the 2013/14 SmartStop/Mountain Khakis 'cross season. We're 6 weeks and 1/3 of the way into the year, so there's a lot recap, and I'll do my best to keep things brief!

2010 season summary

I just had to update my resume for some press release requests, and realized I hadn't really been tracking it at all last season. Piled up at a glance, it wasn't terrible, huh?

It was a drag to break my wrist while I was 3rd overall in the USA Crit Series, but it only made it that much easier to work for Isaac once I was back, and his victory was a victory for the team. You don't get to put leadouts on your resume like assists in hockey.

Winter

It's been a while since I've been home between January 1 and April 1. Like, 4 years or so. And it's not like I didn't train through many, many winters as a junior, and then again as a married guy racing as a hobby. But when people ask me why I've continued to improve of the past few years in my late 30's, the biggest thing I can probably point to is going to Tucson in January and February, and then to the Southeast somewhere in March, and riding 30+ hours a week for a couple of months. "Ride lots," Eddy is alleged to have said. It works.

When I Was Vegan

Check out this little blast from the past, sent along by Gary David. It's a scanned article written by Ben Hewitt from Outside Magazine in March of 2003. It came out just as I was starting my first year as a pro, at 30 years old, with 14 or so years of bike racing (and one retirement) under my belt already. Funny how things go.

Wait Until They Get A Load of Me

I guess it's a big week for me to do telephone interviews? More a coincidence than anything else, but I was flattered to be asked to be interviewed by John Koury, of Two Johns Podcast fame. We did the interview last night, and I haven't listened to it yet, so I hope I don't sound too ridiculous. I was pretty happy with the text of the Cyclocross Magazine phone interview, in as much as it sounded like me when I reread it.  Hopefully that holds here as well:

Follow For Now

One of the great mysteries of the Internet I will never understand: how people will follow you, read your Twitter, Facebook, and blog, and then comment there and elsewhere that your Twitter, Facebook, and blog are idiotic and not worth following, usually with very specific, detailed, and passionate reasons given as to why that is the case.

Surely I'm not the only one who giggles at such behavior?

More mix tapes

I know they're mix CDs, but it's vestigial. It just doesn't sound as good or feel as natural as "mix tapes."

Anyway, Janice got a new CD today. Number 27:
