Associate Coach Ben Turner

Ben Turner is an associate coach with Cycle-Smart, a position he has held since 2003. Ben received a BS in Kinesiology from the College of William & Mary, then an MS in Kinesiology and Applied Physiology from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2001. His time at CU was spent working on cycling performance research in the Applied Exercise Science laboratory.

Ben's research experience has included testing the validity and reliability of the original Tune Power Tap; assessing the demands of national-level women's stage racing at the 2000 HP Women's Challenge; defining maximal sustainable power efforts in the laboratory; comparing the demands of men's and women's professional stage racing during the Tour de 'Toona; and examining the effect of cadence on uphill time trial performance.

Ben raced at the Expert level in mountain biking, and Category 2 on the road. Since 1998, his favorite racing has been cyclo-cross, which he focused on exclusively until his retirement in 2006. His career cyclo-cross highlights include winning the Collegiate SuperCup title in 2000, 3rd place overall in the Verge New England Championship Cyclo-cross Series in 2003, and in 2004 - several podium appearances in UCI events, attending the Euro Cross Camp, and being selected to the US World Championship Cyclo-Cross team.

Ben continues to be involved in 'cross through managing the CLIF BAR Development Cyclo-Cross Team, which he started in 2004. This successful non-profit youth development program strives to not only develop top young cyclo-cross racers and give them the best opportunity to succeed at the national and international level, but also to help them develop into true leaders of the cycling community and their own communities through the team's "sustainable cycling" mission.

Ben's other passion in life is farming. He spend many years studying and training in Biodynamic farming, and has received his Certificate in Biodynamic Farming from the Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association. He is currently working on developing a farm project in Louisville, CO, where he lives with his wife and two young boys.

Ben is currently accepting a limited number of new clients, especially those focused on cyclo-cross.
