Battenkill Me Now

Unfortunately, I don't have a ton of time today to really deconstruct the race in detail. But I'll paste some numbers in here for you to comb through if you like. What you're looking at below are intervals pulled out for the 90 miles of the race itself, up until the exit of dirt section number 4 on lap 2, where I accepted that I wasn't getting back on and began just riding easy to the second feed zone. Additionally, I pulled out all the dirt sections and climbs and isolated them, as best I could see quickly.

How'd it go? Well, it was hard, obviously. And I felt "off" from the start. I was incredibly motivated and excited for the race, but the minute we started pedaling hard I was simply uncomfortable. I didn't feel good on my bike, it didn't feel good to go hard, and I just never felt on top of things. Still, I was able to "do it;" that is, I gritted my teeth, I positioned myself in the top 10 for every dirt section and every climb, and I made all the selections I needed to on the first lap. When we hit the last 20 miles of the first lap and the rain started, I rode the Mountain, Becker, and Meeting House road dirt sections in the first 5 riders. I got dropped on Stage Road and was reconnected by the bottom of the descent. You can't "fake" that, I obviously made the splits when over half the field didn't, but still, I was just under pressure.

One way the race was different from last year is that the early break took 50 full miles to go clear, and didn't finally go away until Stage Road at the end of the first lap. That meant for 2 hours, the race never, ever let up. It was attack and counterattack the entire time. Add the dirt, climbs, rain, and cold to that, and it meant that no one was eating, and even drinking was difficult. We didn't finally pause to eat until we hit the start/finish line at the end of the first lap. By that point my eyes were flashing, I knew I was underfueled, and I ate everything I could get down in the few minutes we paused. That's too late, really, but everyone was in the same boat.

Our team strategy was for 4 guys to cover the early moves, and for Mark Hekman and me to wait for the second lap, and specifically the final 40K. Scott, Joey, Neil, and Eric did a really, really good job on lap 1. There were a number of times a move was going away and we weren't in it. I would start to panic, and then boom, one of them would go across, or two of them hit the front together and sealed the move back up. That kind of riding is what allowed Mark (and eventually Joey) to make the final selections. Because I knew I was not on my best day, I started following moves as well on lap 1. That meant that I likely accelerated my demise, and perhaps I could have made it over the Bunker Hill climb on lap 2 if I stayed conservative and followed the plan. But I knew I was only postponing when I'd get popped, in that case, and I could better serve the team by riding for Mark.

Going into Bunker Hill on lap 2, I rode in the wind, brought Mark and Joey up to the front and into position for the turn leading into the climb, and then just got out of the way and went into survival mode, hoping the team car was still going to be waiting for me at the feed zone. Had I stayed connected on that climb, I would still have been dropped somewhere in the last 40K, but I would have finished. After getting 12th last year, just finishing was not what I was looking to do, and it felt good to do some work for Mark on Joey on my way out.

Other little things I could have done differently? I'm still having a hard time getting my position comfortable on my bike, and was fiddling with it all week. It didn't feel right in the race, and that was a factor. I also have done less VO2max and AWC training going into the race this year compared to last year, on purpose. I opted for one more week of base in order to try and peak for a longer period, starting with Battenkill. Last year I pulled up one week sooner and had an extra week of intensity training at this point. That meant I was better prepared for the 2-5 minute long efforts at Battenkill, but that I was also peaking sooner. This year I wanted to put off when I came to boil by one week, and that meant I was paying for the efforts over threshold a little more. Further, I think I overcompensated on my tire choice based on the conditions, and went with 26 mm tires at 90 psi on a day I could have ridden normal 23's at 105, and had a much faster ride. My tires were great on the dirt, but slow everywhere else. There's still a lot of pavement at Battenkill, and nowhere near the chaos we saw last year.

Finally, I do not think I was mentally prepared to be under someone else's thumb. I _thought_ I was, but because I was a little uncomfortable anyway, finally being in a race with my peers just made me doubt myself too much. Even though I've won 3 races and been on the podium 5 times already this year, they were small races where I was the strongest rider. Certainly I had to go hard, but I was never out of control. I could bridge to any break, cover any attack, and still win the sprint. That can mess with your head when you're finally in a race where people are better than you, and can put you on the ropes. I panicked a bit, I think, and lost a lot of confidence when not only was I being pushed, but I also wasn't feeling sharp enough to dig deep and respond the way I'd hoped. That's the danger of peaking for individual races. You put a lot of pressure on yourself, and you can get a big pop when someone sticks a pin in it.

I guess I did deconstruct the race after all. Have fun with the numbers. Take special note of range 6 and range 16. Both are Bunker Hill Road, on lap 1 and lap 2. On lap 1 I started at the front, drifted back intentionally on the climb to conserve, and stayed connected on the descent. On lap 2 I hit the bottom of the hill at the front, but simply could not dig anymore, and rode up the climb with whatever I had left.
