This is what I get for trying to be a New England tough guy.

It was 45 and raining in Tucson this morning. And what's awesome about Tucson is that you only get one day a month like this in the winter. When it rains like this, the streets flood, all the glass comes into the road, and every sane person just takes a recovery day and starts back up the next day.

I've won the last 3 Shootouts, and I've said repeatedly that while the ride suits me, the main reason I've been winning is because I was willing to lose. The Shootout is fun, but it's just the Shootout. It's a group ride. You want to use it for training in the way that suits you, and you want to have fun. And for me, that's just worked out that past few weeks. I don't care if someone goes away, I don't _need_ to chase them down, I don't ever make myself vulnerable. And so I have enough to jump across to the move if I need to, and win the sprint.
Well, today I finally lost.

I really like putting this training info up, but it's killing me. I figured it would be 15 minutes each night just dumping the info, but combing through the file, marking things, and writing the description ends up taking an hour. And when I'm out training from 10-6 each day and coming home cracked, it's putting a pretty big dent in my ability to get any other Cycle-Smart work done before I pass each night.
As expected, I was tired for the first hour or two of the ride. Not sore or cracked - dull is the best way to describe it.

I'm so exhausted by the time I get to these entries, I forget most of the things I want to tell you about the ride. And it also means there's other work I'm not getting to. But today was a big day. A special day.

It was a sprint day. So naturally I cried. Seems like it's a given now.
Watched 2 dogs get hit by cars. Then I did my sprints.

It's possible I got home with 5:55 on the clock, and did a couple laps around the neighborhood until it said 6:00. But I would never admit to that.
Today we rode out to Kitt Peak. I need to make sure I get all the "monuments" done while I'm here. Lemmon's easy (though I haven't ridden to the top yet), I got Madera in the first week, and we got Sonoita done a few days ago. Today we were looking for a long day, the wind was right, and we had a nice group.

Shootout today, followed by the climb up to Madera Canyon.
Riders take different approaches to how they ride the Shootout. Big watt dudes who are further along in their training like Jon Chodroff like to get on the front ASAP and make the "race" as hard as possible. For me, just sitting in until the shit hits the fan, than doing what I have to in order to make the selection (and then setting up for the sprint) gives me 45 minutes just below threshold.

Sonoita!
There are really only a small handful of rides in Tucson. There are just only so many roads once you get out of town. It's not like on the East Coast where there are always 10 different ways to get from point a to point b, and those roads have been there for over 400 years. Out west there are cities, and then nothing, and then eventually another city.
The thing is, though, the 6 or so rides we do here (Sonoita, Madera Canyon, Kitt Peak, Big Square, Mt. Lemmon, Sierrita, The Shootout, etc.) are all really amazing.

Threshold day today on Mount Lemmon, followed up by a few more hours of endurance. No tears today, so that was good.
It's been warming up a lot here this week, and it was a warm, sunny day in the mid-70's. We were definitely feeling the heat a bit as the went on.
Play by play: we me in town and rode out to Lemmon, so we had about an hour in before we got there. I somehow bent one of the teeth on my big chainring, so I only had a little ring for the day.

Interesting day today.
I had a 2 pm appointment for new orthotics with Bill Peterson of Foot Fitness. He's been making insoles for me since I was 19, and I've been to see him in Newburyport, MA, Newport, RI, and now at his location here in Tucson. Because of the appointment, I had to head out for my ride at 8 am, try to be back by noon to clean up and put on clean clothes, and then ride over and back for the appointment.
